Omaha Beach, the favourite for
Saturday's
Kentucky Derby, has been
scratched, his trainer Richard Mandella confirmed to Churchill
Downs on
Wednesday afternoon. Mandella told reporters that Omaha Beach
has an
entrapped epiglottis. The epiglottis is a triangle-shaped piece
of
cartilage that is at the base of the airway above the soft
palate.
Because of its location, an entrapped epiglottis can cause
difficulties
breathing and would make it difficult to run a race without
reversing
the issue.

Jockeys did not take out horses for
work
during Tuesday's morning
workouts stating that they were yet to get their license from
Bangalore
Turf Club and that the insurance for the jockeys had also
lapsed. The
jockeys had also asked for the norms to be brought to ensure
that only
jockeys passing certain fitness test to be licensed. The
authorities,
lackadaisical as they are, had not acted despite having plenty
of time
on their hand and this has caused the jockeys to stay out. With
the
season fast approaching, preparation of horses is at full swing
and the
absence of jockeys is bound to affect the preparations
immensely. One
hopes that BTC authorities act with alacrity

Stewards of the Madras Race Club to declare the third race as
null and
void. Initially, there was an objection and the same was upheld.
The
white cone was then hoisted and payments released. Subsequently,

void as two
horses had reportedly been interchanged while loading the
horses. The
punters demanded the refund of their money and protested. The
situation
was tense but the BTC Committee quickly ordered for the refund
of money
to all punters to defuse the situation. The BTC lost to the tune
of Rs
